Overview:

The main purpose of the role is conduct diagnostic testing of potato plant, tuber, soil, and water samples using microbiological, serological, and molecular techniques to identify diseases and pathogens. Analyze and interpret test results, maintain accurate laboratory records, and prepare diagnostic reports. Support laboratory quality systems, equipment maintenance, and method validation while ensuring compliance with biosafety, quality, and GEHMS/EHS requirements.


Responsibilities:

  • Sample Management: Receive, log, label, and track incoming samples. Assess sample condition and suitability for testing. Maintain chain-of-custody and sample records. Store samples according to laboratory protocols.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Prepare plant tissue, tuber, soil, and water samples for analysis. Perform disease diagnostics using, Microscopy, Culture-based pathogen isolation, Serological assays (ELISA), Molecular techniques (PCR, rtPCR, DNA/RNA extraction), Identify common potato pathogens and disorders.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze laboratory test results. Interpret findings according to established diagnostic criteria. Prepare accurate and timely laboratory reports. Maintain laboratory databases and records.
  • Quality Assurance: Follow laboratory quality management procedures. Perform equipment calibration and routine maintenance. Participate in proficiency testing and quality control programs. Ensure compliance with laboratory accreditation requirements where applicable.
  • Biosafety and Laboratory Compliance: Adhere to laboratory safety procedures and biosecurity regulations. Properly handle and dispose of biological and chemical waste. Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Research and Development Support: Assist in validation of new diagnostic methods. Support disease surveillance and monitoring programs. Participate in research projects related to potato health and disease management. Contribute to technical reports and scientific documentation.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in plant Pathology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
