My Bad Experience

VF, the company the owns Vans, is not doing very well financially so the heat finally hit the retail part of VF and it started to affect our stores.Pay for sales employees and assistant managers, although did not affect me, is known to be on the low end - which difficult my job when it comes down to hiring and keeping talent as pay isn't competitive and VF/Vans refuse to do anything about it due to how the company is doing financially. If you work at a mall, most likely other companies will end up paying you more as Vans pay isn't competitive at this point. As a store manager I faced some issues that ultimately made me decide to quit my position and go for something else. That would include not getting enough support to run my store, having to deal with store and associate issues when off the clock (on my days off), a lot of thins to control within the store at the same time including different sales, shipment, marketing, visuals and others but I do have to say that my main reason was how my sales employees and assistant managers were being treated when it came down to pay as I know that that kind of situation was unsustainable. Turn over was through the roof and I knew it wasn't going to get any better due to pay not getting any better so I couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel, unfortunately. When we can't hire talented associates or associates that will stay with us for more than a few months, the store manager ends up picking up the slack and I wasn't onboard with that.

Fantastic work environment but falls just short of being a Fantastic job

I've worked at Vans for about a yearPros:- The Coworkers make the job (Never a dull moment at work, even the slow days) - Hours / Availability is extremely flexible, having two jobs or more can be very manageable (and is often encouraged) - There are resources available that you can take advantage of (ex. Internal Employee Assistance Program. You can call at any time for any reason that's currently stressing you) - You have daily sales targets, giving you a goal to work towards each day - Employee Discount is a blessing, just be careful not to go overboard and fill up your closet!Cons (not all relate directly to Vans, but the parent company VF Corp)- Hours, though flexible, are extremely limited. Hours are based on how well your store is doing as a whole. Bad sales = No hours, meaning you could end up with one 4 hour shift per week. - As a part time associate, you're limited to roughly 19-20 hours per pay period. This is not ideal if you intend on keeping only one job (Second job is encouraged) - Due to VF, there has been a track record of layoffs over the last few years. Usually happens around the Holidays. As an overview, Vans is a great retail environment to work in. The people are great and my job is extremely enjoyable. However, VF holds the company back by setting strict regulation on headcount and hours. VF holds Vans back in other ways, but I'd like to keep my review strictly based on my experience at Vans. Definitely do your research on VF before applying.

Pros

Great Work environment / coworkers, Flexible Hours, Internal assistance programs, workplace comes with goals and targets

Cons

Parent Company (VF)

Had its pros and cons

Fun place to work, but training sucked. It was mostly just watching videos and they didn’t teach us much. There was a lot we had to figure out on our own.

Fun work environment

Fun work environment. Definitely room for growth and advancement of you put in the work. All the store managers were super dope, pay was fair and the customers were super fun to work with.

Great place and environment. Corporation does not care.

The actual job location is a great place to work at. However there are layoffs company wide that are not executives, but managers that have no say in the production of products that are high priced and lower quality. As a Floor Supervisor and sometimes as a sales associate you will get blamed for low numbers by DMs and have hours cut for being unable to sell product.

Great coworkers, terrible management

Coworkers are so amazing and supportive along with lower level management, however higher level management is terrible and demands over the top customer service and dedication to company for below average pay and stress. Also, you will only work at most 4 hour shifts twice a week.

Fun job, no advancement

Fun job, laid back and good coworkers, but no chance for advancement in the company at all, at least any farther than store management. Vans parent company VF commonly chooses to hire leaders from outside the company rather from within, take that as you may.

Fast paced environment, great management

I loved working for Vans. You get great discounts on product and management was great. I never felt under appreciated or under trained. The pay has increased since I left, so that’s a plus.

Good culture , good people

Had a great time working at the company over a number of years. Can go up and down the ladder if you work hard enough. Pay isn’t the best though since you are just a general retail worker.

Fun if you’re young and not looking to move up

Fun place to work when you’re just needing a side job. Very little hours for sales associates (4-16 hrs a week). Moving up in your position is nearly impossible. DM is rude and pushy. Sales goals are impossible to reach after covid. Overall just not a great place to work for very long. It’s nice as a side job again or if you just need something until you find something better. The only plus to the whole job is the discount and the coworkers. Really really really great team to work with but not really any other pros.

Fun but lots of downtimes

Very fun and productive, but gets boring a times and there isn't much to do. Other then that not a bad company, love the discounts. Employees listened, so that always is good.

Great First Job Learning Experience

Went into this role as my first job in high school and was overall a positive experience. Seeing the role as a learning experience is what made it fun

Burnt Out

It’s a good first job for high schoolers or college kids. No one really takes it seriously besides the store manager. Always understaffed. The company is dying because they’re too focused on sales and numbers.

fun co workers bad pay bad management

Pay sucks. Too much demoralization from customers and too much pressure to upsell. All jobs like these have the same issue, you just have to be the type of person who can withstand that. I can’t
