About the Role

We are looking for an experienced SQL Engineer / SQL Database Administrator to take ownership of our SQL environment and help us improve the reliability, performance, security and management of our databases.

Our IT team has strong technical expertise across infrastructure and systems administration, and we are looking for someone with specialist SQL knowledge to strengthen the team. This person will play a key role in reviewing our existing SQL infrastructure, identifying areas for improvement and implementing a structured approach to database administration, backup management, maintenance and reporting.

This is a hands-on technical role for someone who understands SQL Server beyond day-to-day queries and can take the initiative to build a robust, well-managed and properly documented environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and assess the existing SQL Server environment, identifying risks, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
  • Design, implement and maintain a reliable SQL backup and recovery strategy, including scheduled backups, retention policies and regular restore testing.
  • Manage database maintenance, including transaction log sizes, database growth, index maintenance, integrity checks and storage capacity.
  • Develop and maintain SQL scripts and automation to streamline administration, monitoring and routine maintenance.
  • Monitor database health, performance and availability, investigating and resolving issues before they become problems.
  • Configure and maintain SQL Server Agent jobs, scheduled tasks, alerts and maintenance plans.
  • Develop database reports and dashboards to provide visibility into database health, performance, capacity, backup status and other key metrics.
  • Review and improve database security, access permissions and configuration.
  • Troubleshoot slow queries, performance bottlenecks, failed jobs and database-related incidents.
  • Establish consistent standards, procedures and documentation for SQL administration and ongoing maintenance.
  • Work closely with the wider IT team to improve the overall stability and resilience of the organisation's systems.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong practical experience administering Microsoft SQL Server environments.
  • Good knowledge of T-SQL, including writing, optimising and troubleshooting queries, stored procedures and scripts.
  • Proven experience designing and managing SQL Server backup and recovery solutions.
  • Strong understanding of transaction logs, recovery models, database growth and log file management.
  • Experience with SQL Server Agent, scheduled jobs, maintenance tasks and automation.
  • Knowledge of database performance tuning, indexing, execution plans and integrity checks.
  • Experience creating SQL reports and monitoring solutions.
  • Understanding of SQL Server security, permissions and best practices.
  • Ability to assess an existing environment, identify weaknesses and implement practical improvements.
  • A methodical approach to troubleshooting, documentation and preventative maintenance.

What We Are Looking For

We need someone who can take ownership of our SQL environment and make a tangible difference. You should be comfortable working independently, assessing what is currently in place and recommending and implementing improvements without needing every step to be prescribed.

The ideal candidate will combine strong technical SQL knowledge with a practical, proactive approach to administration. You will be expected to establish reliable processes, improve visibility of database health, reduce operational risk and ensure that our databases are properly maintained, monitored and recoverable.

This is an opportunity to take responsibility for an important part of our IT infrastructure and build a SQL environment that is reliable, efficient and fit for the future.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience managing multiple SQL Server instances or databases.
  • Familiarity with PowerShell scripting and administrative automation.
  • Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), Power BI or other reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of high availability, disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • Experience working with on-premises, virtualised or cloud-hosted SQL environments.
